Mercenaries are used for tactical purposes - for covering player or adding the combat power to him, mercenaries also increase the possibility of players roles

Will the mercenaries improve their skills,  with the player?

Mercenaries are very valuable resource, you'll replenish your team passing the missions and will be able to train your bodyguards. Mercenaries will be improved in a fight and on reaching right amount of experience will get upgrades in the form of more powerful gear and class. Nevertheless, the mercenaries will have simplified set of abilities in contrast to your character.

Each race will have its mercenaries in appearance similar to your character, mercenaries will differ from each other on the effectiveness and application. All mercenaries will operate in 2 modes of your choice switched during a fight - either unite around you creating additional protection or disperse around helping you to achieve effective suppression of enemy.

Mercenaries are also taken into account in calculating the amount of energy  required  for unique abilities of your tactical role in the group. That is, the more of mercenaries, the greater your combat power and of role potential. Considering leveling of mercenaries, you will be able to have extremely rare fighters in your team and you will not want to lose them in the battle (so you can spend resources and insure them before the battle)

As I understand , the class of the player depends on his equipment:jump pack, heavy weapon etc.

Mercenaries classes are the same as the class of the player?

Mercenaries are developed for one of the three chains of preset classes for each race. In some races are more powerful firing warriors, someone has strong medics and someone else has apostates, endowed with super abilities. However, with increasing levels of each mercenary randomly rise characteristics that give hope for a very valuable mersenary, which you really do not want to lose in battle.

As I understand , the class of the player depends on his equipment:jump pack, heavy weapon etc.

Most likely you have in mind the role as the class is simply conventionality of RPG affecting development. If you want to change your role in the battle you can simply request a drop box  from a planet's orbit, and change your backpack with all the mercenaries, and you, for example, from a destroyer, turn into a scout equipped with a jetpack.
